Kennedy Heiress Lists Hyannis Port Home for $1.6 Million After Failed 'Dream' of Continuing Family's Cape Cod Legacy

Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, the eldest daughter of Robert F. Kennedy, has put her Hyannis Port home on the market for $1.6 million. The decision marks the end of a personal quest to preserve a piece of her family's storied Cape Cod history.

Townsend purchased the three-bedroom, two-bathroom property in 2016 for roughly $1.2 million. She had hoped to restore the house as a gathering place for her own children and grandchildren, recreating the idyllic summers she spent there as a child. In a recent interview, she described the purchase as an attempt to fulfill a "dream" of continuing the Kennedy family's deep-rooted connection to the seaside community.

The home itself is modest by Kennedy compound standards. It sits on a quiet street just a short walk from the larger family estate where her uncle, President John F. Kennedy, once held his famous summer press conferences. Townsend recalled sailing in the harbor and playing touch football on the lawn, memories she wanted to pass down.

However, the reality of maintaining a second home proved difficult. The demands of her career and the logistics of gathering a large, far-flung family made the property underused. She noted that the "dream didn't quite work out" as she had envisioned. The listing agent described the sale as a bittersweet moment for Townsend, who is letting go of the property but keeping the memories. The house, built in 1870, offers classic New England charm with a wraparound porch and water views, but it is the legacy of the Kennedy name that adds the true value to the listing.
