How a 'Haunted' House in New Jersey Inspired the Sinister New England Setting for Matthew Rhys-Led Hit 'Widow's Bay'

The eerie, claustrophobic New England town at the heart of the hit series "Widow's Bay" did not come entirely from the imagination of creator Katie Dippold. Instead, she drew from a very real and unsettling location: a so-called haunted house in New Jersey.

Dippold, who also serves as showrunner for the Matthew Rhys-led drama, revealed that she turned to a wide variety of sources when seeking inspiration for the town's sinister atmosphere. But one particular property stood out. She described visiting a dilapidated Victorian home in rural New Jersey, where local legends spoke of a widow who had vanished under mysterious circumstances in the 1800s. The house, with its peeling wallpaper, creaking floorboards, and a pervasive sense of neglect, became the psychological blueprint for the show's central setting.

"It wasn't just the architecture," Dippold explained in a recent interview. "It was the feeling that the place was holding its breath. Every room felt like it was waiting for something to happen." That tension, she said, translated directly into the show's visual language, from the fog-choked streets to the silent, watchful houses. The real-life house's history of unexplained noises and cold spots also informed the series' supernatural undertones, grounding the fictional town's horror in a tangible, historical dread. The result is a setting that feels less like a film set and more like a character itself, one that has helped make "Widow's Bay" one of the most talked-about shows of the year.
