The Pierre-Fort Pierre Exchange Club has raised the U.S. and South Dakota flags across the Missouri River Bridge in a large display marking the nation's upcoming 250th Independence Day. This year's event, known as Flags Across the Bridge, carries special significance as the country approaches the semiquincentennial anniversary in 2026.
Acrisure and Fischer Rounds Real Estate have stepped in as sponsors for the annual tradition. The partnership helps cover the costs of placing hundreds of flags along the bridge that connects Pierre and Fort Pierre. The display typically runs for several days around the Fourth of July, creating a striking visual corridor for drivers and pedestrians.
Exchange Club members spent the early morning hours installing the flags, working in teams along the bridge's pedestrian walkway. Each flag is mounted on a portable base and spaced evenly to create a continuous line of red, white, and blue. The South Dakota state flag flies alongside the national flag on alternating poles.
The 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence has prompted many communities across the country to plan larger or more elaborate celebrations. For the Pierre-Fort Pierre area, the bridge display serves as an early and visible reminder of that milestone. Club organizers say they hope the flags inspire reflection on the nation's history and the local community's role in it.
The flags will remain in place through the holiday weekend, weather permitting. Volunteers will return to take them down once the observance ends.
